Welcome, humans.

**We had two conversations this week that will rewire how you think about where AI is headed…** ***and neither of them is about a chatbot.***

**First:** [Brandon Baum](https://youtu.be/aC88PwBn8Ro?utm_source=www.theneurondaily.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=watch-template-25) (@heybrandonb), a creator with 25M followers who makes Hollywood-grade cinematic videos… shot entirely on iPhones rigged together with a custom 3D-tracking case. He went from 2 views to 1M+ followers in 30 days during the early days of pandemic lockdowns, and now uses tools like [Adobe Firefly Boards](https://firefly.adobe.com/boards?utm_source=www.theneurondaily.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=watch-the-ai-gap-nobody-s-talking-about-spatial-intelligence) to speedrun pre-vis that used to take weeks.

[![](https://media.beehiiv.com/cdn-cgi/image/fit=scale-down,format=auto,onerror=redirect,quality=80/uploads/asset/file/40966cf9-1b11-4e6d-9b44-c6cd52c6a5e1/image.png?t=1776057381)](https://youtu.be/aC88PwBn8Ro?si=OOb5mk2PIFapseEx&utm_source=www.theneurondaily.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=watch-the-ai-gap-nobody-s-talking-about-spatial-intelligence)

- **The actionable takeaway:** the bar for "good enough production value" just cratered, and Brandon's bet is that the winning content from here on out is the *human, funny, weird* stuff… NOT spectacle. If you're creating anything, his workflow is a cheat code.

**Watch / Listen:** [YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aC88PwBn8Ro&utm_source=www.theneurondaily.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=watch-the-ai-gap-nobody-s-talking-about-spatial-intelligence) | [Spotify](https://open.spotify.com/episode/2l00TYkiI8Mb6yXQtd1hox?si=nDmIi7S0Q0eSJyjLtFEbag&utm_source=www.theneurondaily.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=watch-the-ai-gap-nobody-s-talking-about-spatial-intelligence) | [Apple Podcasts](https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/he-got-1-million-followers-in-30-days-heres-how-ai/id1742267001?i=1000760979121&utm_source=www.theneurondaily.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=watch-the-ai-gap-nobody-s-talking-about-spatial-intelligence)

**Second, and the one we're deep-diving below:** [Peter Wilczynski](https://youtu.be/erCV1MJXU3g?utm_source=www.theneurondaily.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=watch-template-25), Chief Product Officer at [Vantor](https://vantor.com/?utm_source=www.theneurondaily.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=watch-template-25) (formerly Maxar), on the gap nobody's talking about in AI. Frontier models can write code and reason through math olympiad problems, but they have zero grounded understanding of the physical world. Peter's team has been quietly fixing that by building a [3D model of the entire planet](https://youtu.be/erCV1MJXU3g?feature=shared&t=303&utm_source=www.theneurondaily.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=watch-template-25) at 50cm resolution and making it machine-readable.

[![](https://media.beehiiv.com/cdn-cgi/image/fit=scale-down,format=auto,onerror=redirect,quality=80/uploads/asset/file/cce79e06-86f2-4dea-92c2-296a2a9245aa/TN_Thumbnail_PeterWilczynski__1_.png?t=1776214813)](https://youtu.be/erCV1MJXU3g?utm_source=www.theneurondaily.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=watch-the-ai-gap-nobody-s-talking-about-spatial-intelligence)

- **The most interesting thing you'll learn:** how to translate raw satellite pixels into something an AI agent can actually reason about. The same Rosetta Stone trick that made LLMs work on text, but for the Earth itself.

**Watch/Listen:** [**YouTube**](https://youtu.be/erCV1MJXU3g?utm_source=www.theneurondaily.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=watch-the-ai-gap-nobody-s-talking-about-spatial-intelligence) **|** [**Spotify**](https://open.spotify.com/episode/71rhDuYFzTlsF0uaIq91QU?si=OcFJupYMSvG4EIRHD9hzIA&utm_source=www.theneurondaily.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=watch-the-ai-gap-nobody-s-talking-about-spatial-intelligence) **|** [**Apple Podcasts**](https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/this-company-mapped-the-entire-world-in-3d-heres-why/id1742267001?i=1000761587268&utm_source=www.theneurondaily.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=watch-the-ai-gap-nobody-s-talking-about-spatial-intelligence)

To give you a sense of how deep our trust in digital maps already runs: Peter once pulled up to his new apartment building, looked out the window, saw the building… then looked at Google Maps, which showed empty land. And for a split second, he actually *[doubted his own eyes](https://youtu.be/erCV1MJXU3g?feature=shared&t=1034&utm_source=www.theneurondaily.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=watch-template-25). That’s how reliant we’ve become on Google Maps.*

So how do we prevent agents from becoming the same? How do agents actually map, see, and understand the physical world? Grant sits down with Peter to unpack what "spatial intelligence" actually means and why it might be the missing piece for AGI:

- **(**[**16:12**](https://youtu.be/erCV1MJXU3g?feature=shared&t=972&utm_source=www.theneurondaily.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=watch-the-ai-gap-nobody-s-talking-about-spatial-intelligence)**) 6.8 million square kilometers a day:** The insane scale of keeping the planet's digital twin up to date.

- **(**[**38:19**](https://youtu.be/erCV1MJXU3g?feature=shared&t=2299&utm_source=www.theneurondaily.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=watch-the-ai-gap-nobody-s-talking-about-spatial-intelligence)**) Digital forensics on a map:** How synthetic imagery could let analysts reconstruct events frame-by-frame—think January 6th timelines or courtroom evidence reviewed spatially.
- **(**[**40:06**](https://youtu.be/erCV1MJXU3g?feature=shared&t=2406&utm_source=www.theneurondaily.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=watch-the-ai-gap-nobody-s-talking-about-spatial-intelligence)**) Raptor: GPS-free navigation:** How Vantor's compressed world model lets drones, robots, and (eventually) AR glasses navigate by "seeing" the world the way humans do.

**Bottom line:** Language models got us to reasoning. Spatial intelligence is what gets AI into the real world—whether that's robots, self-driving, AR glasses, or the next Google Maps that doesn't gaslight you about whether your apartment exists.

Here's how Peter’s system actually works, end to end:
=====================================================

Vantor's satellites constantly image the Earth ([6.8 million square kilometers a day](https://youtu.be/erCV1MJXU3g?feature=shared&t=972&utm_source=www.theneurondaily.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=watch-template-25)), beaming down raw pixels as gigabyte-scale files. But raw 2D pixels aren't enough; you need to know where things actually are in space. So the first move is projecting those 2D images into a [true 3D model](https://youtu.be/erCV1MJXU3g?feature=shared&t=720&utm_source=www.theneurondaily.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=watch-template-25) (a capability Vantor built out after acquiring Vicon).

**The result:** over 100 million square kilometers of the planet rendered at 50cm resolution with 3-meter spherical accuracy. Accurate enough that they account for tectonic plate drift and seismic wave movement over time. That's the foundation, what Grant called a "[ground truth world model](https://youtu.be/erCV1MJXU3g?feature=shared&t=915&utm_source=www.theneurondaily.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=watch-template-25)": a continuously updated 3D replica you can actually navigate inside.

Now, raw pixels alone are useless to an AI agent. So they run that 3D world through [embedding models](https://youtu.be/erCV1MJXU3g?feature=shared&t=426&utm_source=www.theneurondaily.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=watch-template-25), the same trick that let large language models (LLMs) do retrieval augmented generation (RAG) over text (where the AI answers from text you give it vs its training data).

Basically, every patch of Earth gets projected into a high-dimensional vector space (mathematical structures with dozens to thousands of dimensions, representing complex data like images, text, and user preferences as points, the "vectors"). In this space, "car-like" things cluster with the word car, "forest-like" things cluster with forest, and so on. As Peter explained, it's a [Rosetta Stone](https://youtu.be/erCV1MJXU3g?feature=shared&t=592&utm_source=www.theneurondaily.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=watch-template-25) between raw satellite imagery, human language, and machine reasoning. So when an AI "looks" at a pixel region, it knows what a human would call it.

Then comes the [semantic hierarchy](https://youtu.be/erCV1MJXU3g?feature=shared&t=1985&utm_source=www.theneurondaily.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=watch-template-25). Zoom in all the way and an AI sees tire. Zoom out: car. Out further: parking lot. Further still: school (because a track + building + parking lot = high school, per a 2014 Sandia paper Peter cites). Zoom all the way out and the labels collapse the way they do on Google Maps: the street you're on becomes San Francisco becomes California becomes the Americas.

The goal (not sure if they've fully achieved this yet or are still working on it) is that each layer is navigable by both humans and machines, with the same underlying vector grammar. So your agent can see what you see, and understand what it means.

**That unlocks all kinda stuff we geeked out about in the back half:**

- ([34:47](https://youtu.be/erCV1MJXU3g?feature=shared&t=2087&utm_source=www.theneurondaily.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=watch-template-25)) **Predictive world models:** Generate a synthetic image of what a satellite should see in 3 hours, then diff it against what actually comes back. Scientific method, but for the planet.
- ([38:19](https://youtu.be/erCV1MJXU3g?feature=shared&t=2299&utm_source=www.theneurondaily.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=watch-template-25)) **Digital forensics on a map:** ProPublica aligned every January 6th video spatially and temporally. Peter's vision: you never watch a video again, you just navigate a map, and videos become viewports into it.
- ([40:06](https://youtu.be/erCV1MJXU3g?feature=shared&t=2406&utm_source=www.theneurondaily.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=watch-template-25)) **Raptor (GPS-free nav):** Compress a chunk of the world model, hand it to a drone or AR headset, and it navigates by matching what its camera sees to the 3D map, the way humans do. Works when GPS is jammed or spoofed.
- ([59:02](https://youtu.be/erCV1MJXU3g?feature=shared&t=3542&utm_source=www.theneurondaily.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=watch-template-25)) **Physical-world app discovery:** Your AR glasses install the Chipotle app when you walk into Chipotle. The physical world becomes the navigation layer for a digital world that's gotten too crowded.

And that's not even all of it. Peter riffed on how current world models are still [5 to 10 years behind language models](https://youtu.be/erCV1MJXU3g?feature=shared&t=800&utm_source=www.theneurondaily.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=watch-template-25) (not just the tech, but the vocabulary; the phrase "world model" itself is doing way too much work right now).

We also got into whether AGI (artificial general intelligence, an AI that can generalize and reason across any domain) MUST have spatial intelligence to be "AGI." Peter pushed back on Grant's take, pointing out that stock trading happens in a basically one-dimensional interface, so "AI must think in 3D" isn't a given. But the most important actions in the world are physical, and those absolutely will be.

He also cited a [great Borges short story](https://youtu.be/erCV1MJXU3g?feature=shared&t=1823&utm_source=www.theneurondaily.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=watch-template-25) about cartographers who built a map so accurate it was the exact size of the territory, leather draped over the entire world, slowly falling apart. His point: the digital world is the only place you can actually pull that off.

We talked about how [historical maps were arguably better than Google Maps](https://youtu.be/erCV1MJXU3g?feature=shared&t=486&utm_source=www.theneurondaily.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=watch-template-25) because they warped reality on purpose to communicate context. The NYC subway map draws Manhattan bigger than Brooklyn because that's what matters for the purpose of the map.

But the spiciest stuff came at the very end, when Peter laid out his big bet: as the digital world gets infinitely noisier, the [physical world becomes the new navigation layer](https://youtu.be/erCV1MJXU3g?feature=shared&t=3600&utm_source=www.theneurondaily.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=watch-template-25). Walk into Chipotle, your glasses surface the Chipotle app. Walk into McDonald's, you get McDonald's. Location is the last honest signal in a sea of infinite digital content.

We already see a weird version of this in channel marketing: brands buy out NYC subway takeovers not to get subway riders to download the app, but to generate photos of the takeover that spread on Instagram. The physical world has become a scarcity engine for digital attention.

Peter thinks [QR codes are an ugly prototype](https://youtu.be/erCV1MJXU3g?feature=shared&t=3691&utm_source=www.theneurondaily.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=watch-template-25) of this, and the real version is "digital waypoints" positioned in physical space that your agent can read even when you're not looking.

Which leads to the wildest idea in the whole conversation: the future of ordering fast food might not involve you at all. Your agent will know to talk to this specific McDonald's franchise because it's the one you physically walked up to. Routing that used to happen via phone numbers and addresses, now mediated by GPS coordinates and the semantic hierarchy we talked about earlier. Agent-to-agent communication, but grounded in a real place.

Peter's [take on AR specifically](https://youtu.be/erCV1MJXU3g?feature=shared&t=3202&utm_source=www.theneurondaily.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=watch-template-25) is that it shouldn't feel like Alexa, where you have to "go to Hogwarts and learn all the spells." It should feel like installing an app. Imagine AR replacing YouTube tutorials entirely: instead of rewatching someone solve a Rubik's Cube on repeat, little arrows appear on your cube in your hands, generated live from millions of video frames repro'd into vector cues streamed from your glasses. You never watch the video. You just learn to do the thing with procedural cues that guide you in real time. *This is how tech should work in an “AGI-pilled” future.*
